The audience of my paper will be aware of the subject, as the topic has been in the news in ad nauseam over social media, news outlets, newspapers, and personal conversation. As climate change is a controversial topic, there are many sides to this subject. I will be analyzing science-based articl es from NASA, and NOAA and comparing them with the views of scientists, and popular news outlets. What are climate and climate change? The definition of climate is rarely disputed; according to NASA, climate is ââ¬Å"typical or average weatherâ⬠(Dunbar) Climate change, however, has a different definition depending on where one gets their information. NASA describes climate change as: ââ¬Å"range of changes that are happening to our planet. (Global Climate). However, if one looks to another news outlet, they would get this definition: ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢Global Warmingââ¬â¢ is a sham... A sham perpetuated by a network of dirty government officials, greedy corporations, and bought off scientific organizationsâ⬠(Scientist Confesses). The difference is in not only information being given, but how a rhetor presents the information. When NASA is outlining definitions, they are straight to the point; they have an idea to present, and they present it. This is drastically different from the Newsmax source. In this source, there is little to no mention of climate change until page 3 of the article to find what the article is even about, one must sift through page upon page of imaginative situations and economic statistics. The Dress free essay sample
ââ¬Å"The Dressâ⬠is a short story about a dysfunctional family, consisting of two sisters, Flora and Rachel, and their mother. Flora has stolen Rachelââ¬â¢s dress, spilled a drink upon it and afterwards buried it in the garden. The conflict erupts during their motherââ¬â¢s birthday meal at a restaurant. Once at home again from the restaurant the crisis results in both girls leaving the house ââ¬â leaving their mother behind, alone, with a glass of wine. The setting of the story is not distinctly described as it is not crucial for the understanding of the story. The story only features three characters: Flora, Rachel and their mother. Rachel comes across as the bigger sister, frustrated with Floraââ¬â¢s carelessness. Her rage against Flora for stealing the dress is unusual keen, concerning the fact that it is only a dress ââ¬â ââ¬Å"only a scrap of materialâ⬠, as Flora at some point exclaims. As a reader you immediately get a sense of a smouldering danger just beneath the surface. We will write a custom essay sample on The Dress or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Something undefined, yet ominous. Flora is obviously conscious that what she is doing is wrong. But while she understands that her sister will not be pleased with her stealing the dress, she could not possibly imagine the hatred it would release. Flora is ignorant and careless, but she is only immature ââ¬â not vicious. Their mother is a bereavement counsellor, but despite this she is unable to deal with the daughters constant intrigues. When she is at home she has a need to distance herself from her professional work, and therefore she only wishes to be in a loving and caring environment. This results in a neglection of her daughters, which has obviously had an effect on the two sisters. Rachel depresses her feelings, and is unable to handle them: ââ¬Å".. Rachel knew that she would have to be pleasant, to forget about her stolen dress, wear something else, and smile. â⬠, and Flora is desperately trying to get her motherââ¬â¢s attention. The mother feels unsafe about facing serious problems in real life: ââ¬Å"She (the mother) liked emotions to be explored in safe rooms, with a clock. â⬠She is rather ignorant about the serious crisis between her daughters, and would like them to make an effort to behave nicely, and hide away their problems. The relationship between the two sisters is tensed. Flora is dangerously jealous of Rachel, and secretly wishes to be just like her: tall, brave and clever. The dress represents everything that Flora wants to be ââ¬â and everything that Rachel is. But the other way around Rachel seems to feel jealousy towards Flora too. When she realises her dress has gone, and she imagines how Flora would be sitting at a cafe wearing it, Flora is described rather incredible. As if Rachelââ¬â¢s perception of Flora is that she is superior. Rachel may be feeling overlooked and deprived of motherly care, as her sister desperately craves their motherââ¬â¢s attention. This naturally generates a fierce hate against whoever, in this case Flora, gets the attention she is deprived from. This may explain why Rachel reacts unexpectedly intense in the matter of the stolen dress. To her it is not just the dress ââ¬â it is Flora steeling the attention and loving care that she, Rachel, was meant to have. The mood in this short story is the feeling of a great danger just underneath the surface. Something that is much more frightening than the superficial crisis in the mutual relations. It makes you feel like you are apathetically awaiting something unpredictable, yet inevitable. The whole story seems to me like an allegory. Nothing seems right, just as if the story is a transparent layer, covering up the real story. The dress in this story is the main symbol. It plays a central role in the relationship between the two. Between the sisters the dress is a symbol of the differences between them and the jealousy. Flora is trying to ââ¬Å"steelâ⬠the identity of her sister Rachel. Flora is insecure, and feels like she deserves the dress (Rachelââ¬â¢s qualities) more. This frustrates Rachel for if Flora becomes Rachel, then who is Rachel? When flora buries the dress in the garden, it becomes a symbol of neglection of the jealousy, and her failed attempt of becoming like Rachel. The language is down to earth and everyday like. The sentences vary from very short, definite, ones when describing actions, to longer descriptive ones when describing surroundings. It creates a perception of a dull and ordinary life. The main themes are jealousy and neglection the jealousy that Flora feels for Rachel, and their motherââ¬â¢s neglection of them, and their emotions. The short story is about a motherââ¬â¢s inability to cope with the crisis between her daughters, despite the fact that she is actually a bereavement counsellor. Maybe there is a connection between the motherââ¬â¢s profession, and Floraââ¬â¢s act of burying the dress, which is rather ironic.

Columbus, The Indians, And The Human Progress Essays - Americas
Columbus, The Indians, And The Human Progress Spain, being recently unified, wanted spices and gold. The gold to them could purchase anything. So they offered Christopher Columbus ten percent of the profit, if he would bring back gold and spices. Christopher Columbus was sent to Asia with three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Columbus sailed for thirty-three days not sighting land. It wasnt until early October of 1492 that he and his crew finally landed. He supposedly was the first to sight land and received a ten thousand maravedis as his reward. It was not him, but a member of his crew who first sighted land, Rodrigo. But Columbus got the credit. As Columbus and his crew approached the island, they were greeted by the native inhabitants of the island. The natives were the Arawak Indians, and the island they were on was the Bahama Islands. The Arawaks gave them food, water, and incredible gifts. Columbus took some of the natives as prisoners so they could show him where the gold was. They took him to Hispaniola. Hispaniola, as Columbus reported, was beautiful, fertile, filled with gold and other metals. Columbus had promised Spain and investors gold, but there wasnt much gold to be found. He ordered that Indians ages fourteen and over to collect gold. After the Indians collected the amount of gold required, they were given copper token necklaces to prove that they had collected the gold. Later, it was obvious that no more gold was left to collect, so the Indians were taken to work on estates. They worked hard and many died. None of the original Arawaks were left on the Bahama Islands. Bartolome de las Casas transcribed Columbuss log. He wrote a multivolume History of the Indies. He wrote that the Indians had no temple, if not a religion. Las Casas writes of how the Spaniards were becoming more conceited as the days passed. The Spaniards killed for fun. They considered themselves to on top of the world. After collecting gold for about 6-8 months, the gold was melted. This was such hard labor, that many died. According to Casas, over three million died. The women were so malnourished that they could not produce milk for their babies. The babies were often killed out of the mothers desperation. The men worked so hard in the mines, stressed killed them. Samuel Eliot Morison wrote that we shouldnt accept the atrocities so easily, but to not make a big deal about it either, because it was in the past. It didnt happen to us in the present. No point in grieving for the victims or judging the villains, because it wont make a difference. Its much easier to bury the truth than hide it. Columbus did it to the Arawaks, and others did the same. Such as Cortes to the Aztecs, and Pizarro to the Incas. They all took advantage of the natives and abused everything they received. Were these massacres really necessary for the progression of the human race? Of course this question can easily be debated, but remember the key word, necessary. All the gold and silver Spain received, it didnt make it richer, but a little more powerful in the combat area. What was the point of being a little stronger if you lost the wars to come? Everything became worse than it was before. Even though Columbus referred to the natives as Indians, we do so because there is the possibility that they originated from Asia. Indians have become more evolved. Around the time of Christ, there was a culture of Indians, also known as Moundbuilders. They built many gigantic sculptures. Many Indian cultures had their own laws, poetry, and tales to tell on to future generations. The main point being this: is it right for someone to take anothers life just to progress in life and tell the story as if they were the heroes? Bibliography Zinn History Essays

MBO â⬠Management by Objectives
MBO ââ¬â Management by Objectives Free Online Research Papers Management by objectives (MBO) ââ¬â Define: Management by objectives is a process through which specific goals are set collaboratively for the organisation as a whole and all units and individuals within it. The goals are then used as a basis for planning, managing organisation activities, evaluation of performance and reward. An effective approach to enhancing organisation effectiveness? Agree? Strengths First of all letââ¬â¢s take a look at strengths of MBO. MBO provides an environment where employees can voice on how their jobs are designed and what their performance targets should be. Aid in planning by making managers establishes goals. Improved communication between both management and employees, because both can express their views on what objectives they can and cannot accomplish. Everybody in the organisation becomes more aware of the organisationââ¬â¢s goals. The evaluation process becomes fairer because people are measured on specified targets and their performance in achieving goals of the organisation. With specific objectives laid out, suggestions from all levels of management can be obtained. Managers will have clearer idea of the vital areas of their responsibility and the standards that are required. Hence, allowing them to focus and utilize their resources. MBO creates a participatory work environment to help employees become more involved. In this way, every subordinate in the organisation is more motivated. Weaknesses It has been said that management by objectives has been a failure more often than a success, here are some problem areas. MBO process requires too much time, effort and paperwork in setting goals, objectives and energy to implement the whole system effectively. Some managers would rather see employees fail just to prove their own superiority. Some managers set unrealistic objectives, placing pressure for performance at the expense of employees. Generally the main barrier to effective MBO is lack of support from top-management, and it is easily stalled by authoritarian managers. Before MBO can be implemented, many changes have to be done in the organisation, including the control procedures and the general style of the management. There may appear problems with goal acceptance and shortages of management and workers skills. Training in counseling and interviewing is needed. The support needed to achieve goal achievement is too often not enough for some managers. When conditions of the organisation changes, objectives must be reviewed and revised. Organisation will lose opportunities if MBO puts on a strict emphasis on creativity or individual innovation in managers and their staffs. Construction Adjudication Law - Legal problem Coursework
Construction Adjudication Law - Legal problem - Coursework Example The architects in question who did the preliminary design had the obligation to check the ground conditions and foundation requirements. PCL bears a partial responsibility for the design flaw. The matter is referred to adjudication under clause 9.2 of the JCT Design and Building Contract. There were a number of issues with the adjudication process and this include a reliable information that the CEO of PDP and the Adjudicator went for a weekend in a country hotel where they were overhead discussing things related to the case. From the case study, there is the need for the following things and matters to be examined in relation to the relevant rules about: 1. The scope of the Adjudicator's obligations and whether it was met or not. 2. The independence of the Adjudicator. 3. The impartiality of the Adjudicator's processes in dealing with the case 4. The ability of the case to be escalated to a court dispute. Scope of Adjudication The main issue of contention is to define the actual que stion and the actual point of law that the adjudicator of the case at hand was supposed to handle. This is in response to the accusation of the CEO of PDP that the adjudicator addressed the wrong question. ... ication of the relevant provision, it can be said that the obligation of the Adjudicator in this case is to identify the procedure that was used by the contracting party and which party deserves to be held responsible for the damage. In other words, the Adjudicator has to examine the contract between PDP and PCL and identify who is responsible for the determination of the soil condition and the point in the contract that it went wrong. The evidence of both parties were to be examined and a conclusion could be drawn. However, in this case, it is apparent that the Adjudicator did not spend too much time studying those documents. Rather, he examined just two variables, the architects and PCL's relative positions. He did not go deep into the contract, neither did he set out a fair procedure. Hence, it can be concluded that he did not operate within the scope of the contract. Independence of the Adjudicator The Adjudicator happened to be the brother-in-law of the MD of PCL. This shows cle arly that they had an informal relationship that could have implications for the independence of the Adjudicator. The Adjudicator, as a professional, has codes of ethics in the profession he belongs to, whether he is a legal professional or a construction expert. Every adjudicator needs to be independent and be seen to be independent in his decisions and procedures3. In a landmark ruling in a construction arbitration case in France, which is part of European Union Law, it was stated that ââ¬Å"An Arbitrator should not have any commercial or other similar connection with either party which may give rise to suspicion in the mind of a reasonable person that he may be biasedâ⬠4. The implication is that there should be no relationship that exists between an adjudicator and any of the parties that

Introduction and Perspectives on Training Essay
Introduction and Perspectives on Training - Essay Example From this discussion it is clear thatà organisations employ training for operational and strategic issues consequent to internal and external changes. Organizations train their employees for skill enhancement, knowledge acquisition, honing of abilities for increase of performance in the work settings.à The success of the training programme does not guarantee that training would be successfully transferred to the workplace. Trainability, the ability to learn and apply training material imbibed during the training programme at the workplace, is a function of ability, motivation and environmental favourability.à Along with interest in training has arisen an increased interest in learning technologies and performance enhancement processes practices and services). The study of transfer of training has evolved from notions of ââ¬Ëshared elementsââ¬â¢ to ââ¬Ëcognitive interpretationsââ¬â¢ of transfer.à à Transfer of training construct is used to describe those aspec ts of the work environment that directly influence the generalisation and maintenance of knowledge and skills learned during training . This discussion highlights thatà in a survey of 150 organizations, less than 50 percent of employees transferred only one half of their newly acquired skills six months after the transfer. On the other hand, the importance of transfer climate can be gauged from the fact 50 percent of all the à performance improvement resulting from training intervention, may be attributed to those post-training activities, which support the transfer process.

1800ââ¬â¢s message media Essay Example for Free
1800ââ¬â¢s message media Essay Prior to photographys debut, only the wealthy and the powerful could afford the services of an artist to paint their portrait. Photography provided an affordable means for many to obtain likenesses. In an 1864 speech on pictures, Frederick Douglass discusses the impact that the early photographic formats made on society. First, Douglass views photography as the great equalizer of race and class in that a servant girl could now afford to have a likeness made of herself. Second, the observation illustrates the impact that images had on society more than 150 years ago. The access to such an affordable product encouraged many free blacks to have their portraits taken. Third, the speech is important because it represents an African American perspective on photography. The daguerreotype was the earliest commercial photographic format and was named for its inventor, Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre. It was popular from its invention in 1839 until around 1860. Daguerreotypes are unique and fragile and images of non-whites are somewhat rare. The daguerreotype of Frederick Douglass is one of the earliest known images of him and is unusual because of the profile pose said to symbolize nobility of character. The Douglass image represents the control that free blacks had over how they wished to be perceived by the public. In many of his early photographs, Douglass appears poised, cultured and sometimes defiant as in the engraving of Douglass taken from the frontispiece of his second autobiography My Bondage My Freedom. A comparison of the first two photographs of Douglass with a later drawing of him shows a startling difference, a difference which was noted by Douglass in a book review in the North Star. Douglass commented on this drawing of him by Wilson Armistead. Douglass comment is based on his on-going criticism of the portrayal of African Americans by white artists. Possibly, Douglass did not pose for the Armistead drawing but in the photographic portraits, he had much more control over how he wished to be portrayed. Douglass was one of the most photographed individuals of the 19th century. (Wells, 1996) Until the latter half of the nineteenth century, the portrayal of the Black image in American painting and in the larger context of art remained somewhat elusive and descriptively narrow. The problem of interpretation is seldom a simple one. Thus, with a subject as controversial as the depiction of race and how it should be rendered in the name of honest imagery, artists often were at the mercy of clients who were not objective in their description of race. The actual observations of subjects from within the Black race had little impact on the making of Black images in painting. Much of what emerged from white artists as a sympathetic statement about the Black race in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries came largely from the imagination of the artists. Often, they willfully stereotyped Black subjects by carrying out the wishes of clients who wanted a portrait of their favorite Black servant recorded along with themselves. The results of such a practice were Black images in the art of painting that covered a gamut of visual responses, from the more positive sophisticated imagery of John Singleton Copleys Watson and the Shark, in which a Black man is shown as an equal, awestruck spectator in the boat, to the tattered-torn destitute Black people in the paintings of William Aiken Walker in which field hands are seen picking cotton on southern plantations. By contrast, from 1700 to 1900, very few images of Blacks appeared in sculpture other than in folk items. Those which have survived were often made to show subjects with exaggerated features highlighting what most would describe as unfavorable stereotypic characterizations of the Black race. Some of these grotesque characterizations of Blacks have survived into the twentieth century. One could all but characterize the subjects which occur in the first four time periods listed by citing the recurring themes which white American artists chose to depict in which Blacks were the principal subjects. Blacks are depicted as servants and slaves, noble savages, or servant/war heroes; a few are seen as gentlemen of color. As early as 1838, Blacks were seen as entertainers of whites, serving as musicians and comic capers. Among the visual documentation found are slave sales and slave market scenes, field scenes depicting work experiences as well as those sharing the laziness of the race, and Blacks who serve to promote the sale of food. These are among the constant images that recur in the work of American artists from 1840 until the end of the Civil War. Artistry toward Articulating Personal Characteristics A cursory study of Blacks in American painting reveals that they were virtually ignored as primary figures. When depicted, they were presented more often as servants in the employ of wealthy householders or in scenic settings in which they provide music as entertainment and on occasion singing and dancing for self-entertainment ( Epstein 1). As time passed, such images have come to be looked upon as stereotypic and only partially accurate in showing the full range of the lifestyle and activities of Blacks in colonial and post-Revolutionary America. Dimension is not a term which can readily describe the treatment that Blacks received from the hands of artists of the majority culture prior to the latter half of the nineteenth century. In all ways of visual description, Blacks were depicted with contempt. What is seen today as an appreciable change among mainstream artists in their portrayal of the Black subject is a trend which began to change with the imagery of William Sidney Mount ( 1807-1868) and Winslow Homer ( 1836-1910), both of whom depicted Black subjects with reasonable likeness in their time in history. Of the two, Mount showed limited sensibilities to the plight of the race. Homer directed his artistry toward articulating personal characteristics of the race, painting distinct individuals who lived separate lives devoid of the stereotypic cast placed on previous Black sitters. Homer avoided placing Black figures into a cramped space devoid of compositional clarity. While one tends to look favorably on those images created by William Sidney Mount and on those still-unknown artists of the period that show Blacks as musicians, farmers, and members of their own households, in the main, those images were most often rendered in a manner that singled out Black Americans as being happy with their fate and destitute state in life. More often, they appeared untutored in the cultural ways of white society and visually represented a helpless people without civilized roots and a distinct ethnic history. (Smith, 1988).

We Need More Animal Research, Testing, and Experimentation Essay
We Need More Animal Research, Testing, and Experimentation à A life can be taken or created in a matter of seconds and with that has come the miracles of modern medicine. People have come to expect science to save lives, prevent illness, relieve suffering and improve the quality of life. The means of curing, treating and preventing diseases are not achieved by magic or accident. Medical advances are gained through years of intensive research -- research in which laboratory animals have played, and continue to play, a critical role. Opponents of animal testing are wrongfully determined that this process is completely unethical. Animals have been used for experimentation for around 2,000 years. In the third century BC in Alexandria, Egypt, the philosopher and scientist Erisistratus used animals to study the human body. Five centuries later, the Roman scientist Galen used apes and pigs to prove a theory about veins being full of blood and not air ("Animal Experimentation . . ." 74). Since then several experiments have educated man in many ways that wouldn't have been possible without the use of animals. The debate about animal testing started well over 130 years ago ("The Ethical . . ."). There is no doubt that the animal experimentation performed 100 years ago was cruel and unjust, but since then many changes have taken place. A century ago animals were experimented on without the benefit of modern anesthetics and painkillers, and since then several laws have been passed to prohibit inhumane treatment of animals. Virtually every major medical advance of the last century has depended upon research with animals. Since the early 1900's, 90 Nobel Prizes for medicine have been awarded. At least 60 of these were for disc... ...ts: Animal Rights. California: Greenhaven Press, Inc., 1996. pp. 73-81. "Animal Research Helping Kids." Foundation for Biomedical Research. Cosi hsc practice essay Essay
Discuss how Nowraââ¬â¢s perspective on personal relationships is conveyed in Cosi. The play Cosi by Louis Nowra is an emotional portrayal of personal relationships in a Melbourne mental institution ostracised by society. Throughout the play Nowraââ¬â¢s perspective on personal relationships develops and changes through character relationships and development, especially the development of the main protagonist Lewis. Nowra conveys his perspective on personal relationships through themes such as the importance of love and fidelity, the empowerment of women and learning and self-development. Techniques such as symbolism, intertextuality and contrast are also used to further highlight Nowraââ¬â¢s perspective. Nowraââ¬â¢s perspective on personal relationships is primarily shown through the character Lewis and his personal relationships with other characters in the play, especially in his relationship with his girlfriend Lucy. Act Two, Scene Two which features a confrontation between Lewis and Lucy on their relationship is significant in showing this. In this scene, Lucy comes to pick Lewis up to take him to the moratorium meeting and Lewis must decide between staying for the play and going with Lucy. Nowraââ¬â¢s belief on the importance of the existence of love and fidelity in a relationship is shown when Lewis says to Lucy ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s about important things like love and fidelityâ⬠. Intertextuality is used here through Lewisââ¬â¢ character development and change of values that is evident in this line. This change occurred through his participation in the production of Cosi Fan Tutte with the patients and his exposure to the themes in the play. The women in both Cosi Fan Tutte and Cosi are often compared with the Arabian Phoenix which acts a symbol for a womanââ¬â¢s constancy or fidelity. ââ¬Å"A womanââ¬â¢s constancy is like the Arabian Phoenix. Everyone swears it exists, but no one has seen it.â⬠This is quoted by Lewis to Lucy to further convey Nowraââ¬â¢s belief in the importance of love and fidelity in a relationship. As Cosi was written in a time where a huge social change was occurring and women were beginning to have more sexual freedom with the invention he birth control pill, a lot of aspects of the play focus on the empowerment of women and the double standards that exist between and women in society especially when it comes to fidelity. This is shown in Nowraââ¬â¢s contrast of Act Two, Scene One and Act Two, Scene, Two. In Scene One, Lewis is unfaithful as he kisses Julie but in Act Two he reprimands Lucy for sleeping with Nick failing to mention his own infidelities. Intertextuality is used in this scene when Lewis claims that a womanââ¬â¢s constancy is like the Arabian Phoenix, revealing his hypocrisy. Through Lewisââ¬â¢ condemnation, Nowra demonstrates that, although modern society has become more sexually lenient, there are still double standards that occur which condone menââ¬â¢s fidelity but condemn womenââ¬â¢s fidelity. It is revealed that Nowra believes that men and women should be equal not only in relationships but in society too. Julie articulates the message at the beginning of the play when she says that men ââ¬Å"want women to deceive them because it will prove their worst thoughts about womenâ⬠which in contrast is confirmed by Lewisââ¬â¢ attitude towards Lucyââ¬â¢s infidelities.

Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb By Jason Chamberlin Essay
Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb: By Jason Chamberlin The atomic bomb was one of the most impacting event of the 20th century. It forever changed the way that people looked at war. For the first time, the human race possed the ability to destroy on a massive scale, and they actually got to see how they could do it during the second World War. It was a decision that the president, Harry Truman, had to think and decide very carefully on what exactly he wanted to do. Never in the history of war has anyone had the power that now existed within the United States of America. With a single decision, the President struck fear in the people of other nations. It was an exclamation point that stated how powerful a nation that America now is.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Through testing and many secret meetings, President Truman gave the final order to use it. The title that was given to the creation of the atomic bomb was the Manhattan Project. This was the name that was given to ensure that the bomb be kept a secret. Some of the people that were working on it did not even realize what they were doing. The project was worked on all over the country, making it even more of a mystery as to what the Untied Sates was doing.2 The Target Committee was made up to watch over the project and discuss areas of concern with it. They were the ones that would report to different military officials in order to keep the President informed. In meetings at Dr. Oppenheimerââ¬â¢s office in Los Alamos, topics such as status of targets and rehearsals of the bomb were discussed.3 The Target committee tried to cover all areas of the bomb in order to make sure everything went perfect. This is where the actual information started in order to plan out each and every step leading up to dropping the bomb. The information was crucial to the whole project. There would be no way that the President would order the bomb to be dropped unless they had it working perfect. Dr. Oppenhiemer was the main scientist that would be in direct contact with General Groves. The general would then inform the President.4 On Monday July 2nd, 1945, General Groves called Dr. Oppenheimer to discuss testing the bomb itself. In there phone conversation

Essay about Psychology Classical Conditioning - 1146 Words
BEHAVIORISM Classical conditioning is a type of learning through which an organism learns to associate one stimulus with another. It can also be known as respondent conditioning. The stimulus is any event or object in the environment to which an organism responds. The components of classical conditioning are as follows: Unconditioned response (UR) which is a response that is elicited by an unconditioned stimulus without prior learning. Unconditioned Stimulus (US) which elicits a specific unconditioned response without prior learning. Conditioned Stimulus (CS) which is a neutral stimulus that after repeated pairing with an unconditioned stimulus becomes associated with it and elicits a conditioned response. Next we will look at Watson. Watson coined the term behaviorism. This means it is referring to the school of thought that proposed limiting psychology to the study to overtly operable behavior. He and his assistant conducted a study that proved fear could be classically conditioned. He used a toddler to perform these experiments. In doing so, his testing has causes the American Psychological Association to have new standards in place to watch the safety of humans and animals alike when participating in experiments. Watsonââ¬â¢s studies and research are utilized today in some therapies that help unlearn phobias. He also concluded that over a personââ¬â¢s lifetime, their fears will persist and modify. Edward Thorndike is another contributor to the world of psychology. He had formulated several laws of earning. Thorndike believed and after experimenting stated that most learning occurs thru trial and error. The law of effect is the most important that he states. This is saying that when one knows the consequence or what the effect will be of a certain response, then the r eaction would be either strengthened or weakened. Learn how to protect yourself now. How Piracy Impacts YouPirated software hurts everyonefrom the software developers, retail storeowners, and ultimately all software users. Consumers are at RiskPirated software directly impacts consumers because: It often lacks key elements and documentation, and it always carries no warranty protection or upgrade options. These untested, counterfeit discs may be infected with viruses that will damage your hard drive and may cripple your entire network. If they copy software at work, users put themselves and their company at risk by pirating a product protected by copyright laws. Economic LossesWhen you purchase counterfeit software, youre supporting disreputable companies, not tax-paying, legitimate businesses that provide jobs and salaries to good citizens. The profits from these sales of counterfeit software dont help expand the economy by providing jobs, taxes, and wages, and there is a good chance the profits are funding additional illegitimate businesses. Legitimate companies never receive any funds from the sale of counterfeit software, and frequently this loss of revenue leads to layoffs for workers in all related industries, from manufacturers to resellers. So, as you can see, purchasing counterfeit software doesnt only impact software manufacturers, it impacts everyone. Innovation is SlowedIntellectual property is the ownership of ideas as well as the control over the tangible or virtual representation of those ideas. Software is intellectual property, as are books, movies, and music.Like music performers and authors, software developers use copyright laws to protect their work and their investment in the field. The theft of intellectual property thus eliminates the resources used to develop newer and better products. Taking ActionIn an effort to level the playing field for honest resellers, Microsoft is taking legal actions against repeat offenders. Microsofts Anti-Piracy Business Desk is a program designed to assist resellers who believe that they have lost a significant amount of business as a result of competitors selling counterfeit software.Consumers can take action by educating themselves on the different forms of piracy and reporting suspected software piracy offenders. Did you know A study commissioned by the Business Software Alliance in 2000 found that 24 percent of the business software applications installed on PCs in the U.S. were pirated. In 2000, 118,000 people lost their jobs and $5.7 billion in wages were lost due to software piracy. If piracy were eliminated in the U.S. and reduced abroad, it is estimated that the industry would produce an additional 1 million jobs by 2005 and contribute $25 billion in tax revenues. Regions of the US with the lowest population density tend to have the highest piracy rates. The Pacific states in the US experienced the highest retail dollar loss $2.1 billion in 2000 alone. What is Piracy Copying and CounterfeitingTwo of the most common forms of software piracy areEnd-User Copying: friends loaning disks to each other, or organizations underreporting the number of software installations they have made. Counterfeiting: large scale duplication and distribution of illegally copied software. .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c , .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .postImageUrl , .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c , .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c:hover , .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c:visited , .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c:active { border:0!important; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c:active , .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u37f716dfc6a601a4e03042c7496d837c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Child Abuse EssaySharing software with friends seems like no big deal, and theres no way it has anything to do with large-scale counterfeiting operations, right? Wrong. Both activities violate copyright laws and put the software users, including you, at considerable risk. End-User CopyingSimple unlicensed copying by individuals and businesses is one of the most common types of software piracy. End-user copying also includes:Installing software on more company computers than you have licenses for Informal disk swapping among friends and associates All of these activities are illegal and put users at risk because they do not have the license to use the software. CounterfeitingCounterfeiting is the large-scale illegal duplication and distribution of software. Many counterfeiting groups are linked to organized crimeand they counterfeit and package the software using sophisticated techniques. The packaged software is then sold as imitation legitimate software. When produced at large volumes, counterfeiting is a sophisticated criminal activity. Software piracy has become a link in money laundering schemes that in turn fund and promote weapons smuggling, gambling, extortion, and prostitution. As the technology used by counterfeiters advances, even sophisticated consumers are often unable to distinguish legitimate software from counterfeit. The rising popularity of shopping on the Internet has increased the potential for deception since you cant see the product in person until it arrives at your doorstepif it arrives at all. Dont be fooledCounterfeiters often attract customers with extremely low price offerings. What you wont find mentioned in their marketing literature, however, are the risks they pass on to consumers. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Consumers who acquire counterfeit software get:Untested software that may have been copied thousands of times over, potentially containing hard-drive-infecting viruses No technical support No warranty protection No legal right to use the productAll for an unbelievable price. Counterfeit software can so closely resemble genuine software that even resellers have been duped into buying and distributing it to their customers. By educating yourself with the built-in security features of Microsoft software, you can protect your software investmentand your computer system. For photos and additional information, see the Microsoft How To Tell Web site and the Piracy Software Management Guide. Counterfeiting FactsSoftware counterfeiting threatens the ability of the industry to maintain its significant contribution to the U.S. economy. According to a 2000 software piracy study by International Planning ; Research Corp., software piracy resulted in the loss of 118,026 jobs in the United States, nearly $1.6 billion in tax revenues and $5.6 billion in wages. In the year ending June 2001, nearly 2.7 million units of counterfeit Microsoft software and hardware were seized worldwide, with an estimated retail value of over $781 millionthe result of dozens of legal actions worldwide. The largest seizure of Microsoft software to date occurred on November 9, 2001 when over $60 million in software was seized. In the 18-month undercover investigation run by the Customs Service, Microsoft investigators worked with the Southern California High Tech Task Force, to interrupt a major counterfeit software distribution pipeline that moved containers of counterfeit software and other illegal c omponents by ship from Taiwan through the Port of Los AngelesWords/ Pages : 1,147 / 24

The Fire Next Time Essays (915 words) - American Literature
The Fire Next Time The Fire Next Time James Baldwin's book The fire Next Time opens up an entirely new world to most readers. It opens the reader to the harsh world of a black boy growing into a man in the poor city slums and all of the issues that a black man has to face. This book does more for the reader than any article published about the black's living in the poor cities in terms of exposure for the reader. The reason why it has this ability is how James Baldwin wrote it. He was able to express all of himself in the essay form with a storytelling technique. Together these two techniques combine to form a collection of essays on what blackness means in America. What makes this form of writing nice for the reader is that by combining many different essays you are able to learn about many different areas of a black man's life. In his collection of essays there is a light shined on the relationship between blacks and whites. Baldwin throughout the book discusses the idea that to be successful in the world that we live you have to live in a white world. This creates a problem because then you have blacks who want to be successful but the whites will not except them. Baldwin deconstructs the myths that surround blackness in America and sets out as a possibility that blacks must learn to accept whites but whites don't have to do the same. Even though he has these thoughts he is not anti white. He understands that one day in this world whites and blacks will have to come together and live as one in order to be successful as a whole. A part of the book that he states this goes, In short we, the black and white deeply need each other here if we are really to become a nation-if we are really, that is, to achieve our identity, our maturity, as men and women. This is a very important part of the book because it shows the reader that the author even though he has been suppressed by whites understands that one day we have to live in unity. What does being black mean? According to Baldwin, being black is unchangeable. It is a burden for a young person to carry. Being black means that one is intended for a particular life, a life with several disappointing outcomes. Part of his book portrays this idea perfectly. You were born where you were born and faced the future that you faced because you were black and for no other reason. This shows that Baldwin believes that being black means that you are stuck in one type of life with no way out. This way of life is a brutal one as well. Baldwin brings up many examples of this in the different essays that you read. One line he writes hits you in the chest and makes you step back from the book and think for a second. You were born into a society which spelled out with brutal clarity, and in as many ways as possible, that you were a worthless human being. For a man to write this about his race makes you really understand what he is feeling and the power that he feels it with. Baldwin describes his own life growing up in Harlem. The wages of sin were visible everywhere, in every wine stained and urine-splashed hallway, in every clanging ambulance bell, in every scar on the faces of the pimps and their whores, in every helpless little newborn baby being brought into danger This is something that you can not be exposed to in any other type of writing besides Baldwin's for the mere fact that his writing is in the form of storytelling and he has the ability to paint a clear picture with this story telling. And you are truly able to see the life that one is exposed to in the slums of Harlem. An issue that the author brings up in the book is the work that a black man can do. He discusses how their options are limited to the lower class for the mere fact that they are black. You learn that his father was a preacher, and that James Baldwin himself is a preacher. In one of the essays he explains how a young black man has to find a gimmick to get into for work. Something that

Bilingual Education Essays - Linguistic Rights, Language Immersion
Bilingual Education Bilingual Education Imagine being brought up in a family speaking only one language for your entire life and then you had to move to a foreign land where the language is different. If you had a choice of progressively learning this new language over the course of six to nine years or being put into a classroom and have to virtually teach yourself the language by listening to others around you, which would you choose? Late exit bilingual education is a more effective form of bilingual education compared to the English immersion form of bilingual education in the fact that there are more benefits and less adverse effects. There are many reasons why late exit bilingual education should be the choice of public schools everywhere with high minority populations. One of the effects of late exit bilingual education is that the students would be able to maintain their cultural background instead of having to give up one or the other. Language is a big part of a person?fs culture. Late exit bilingual education gi ves the non-English speaking students more time to master the English language, which is not an easy language to learn in three years as the English immersion strategy teaches. The findings of the Ramirez team in 1991 evaluating the effectiveness of English immersion, early exit bilingual education, and late exit bilingual education further prove why late exit bilingual education is the one that needs to be used. To look at why keeping one?fs culture is important one just needs to look at how and why this country was founded. The first Americans from England came here so they wouldn?ft have to conform to everything the rulers of England wanted. Immigrants founded this country. One of the greatest things about the United States is that there are so many different types of cultures everywhere you look. It is true that one needs to learn the English language to be successful, but forcing one to give up his or her cultural background is going against everything this country stands for. English immersion does just that by forcing the student to give up his or her cultural background and language (Faltis 191). Late exit bilingual education allows the child to progress effectively through the educational system with the instruction given in English to the extent to make this possible (Schneider, 1976, p. 128.). To throw a student into a classroom that speaks a language that is not familiar to them and forcing them to adjust in three years like English immersion does is not fair to the student. A sink or swim technique is not very beneficial and can cause more harms than good. The English language takes longer than that to gain mastery in even for people who have a firm English base to start from. The expected time to master the English language is anywhere from four to nine years for the average person (Collier, 1992). Time is needed for development, which is just not offered with English immersion. I was in a class with three Hispanic immigrants while I was in high school. They knew no English and were forced to adapt to the all-English environment through English immersion. As expected by the observers of these students, the immigrant students passed the class with D-?es only because the teacher felt it was the best thing for them. We need to realize that these non-English speaking students and other like them who go through the English immersion program will graduate from high school by the mercy of teachers and will not be prepared to be successful in the so-called ?ereal world?f. This leads me to statistics that further the notion that late exit bilingual education is more effective than English immersion. These results were published in the Ramirez report. The Ramirez report contains some very important evidence that suggests late exit bilingual education is the more beneficial program to use. By looking at the report it is clear that even teachers of the English immersion strategy believe that many of the students in their classes would be better off if they remained in the program for more than the three years that it takes now. The report has evidence that
